Named after Queen Maria II's first born son (who died before becoming king), this is where Lisbon's 19th-century aristocrats built their colorful mansions. The giant cedar tree in the garden has been spreading its branches since 1848 - they had to build iron supports to hold it up. Below the garden lies a massive water reservoir that once supplied the whole area (you can still visit it). Today, the old palaces house concept stores and trendy restaurants, and the area is known as Lisbon's LGBTQ+ friendly quarter. (Tip: visit on Saturdays for the organic farmers market, and check out the hidden 19th-century reservoir under the garden - tours run twice daily.)
